Ordinary is Extrodinary

Extravagance is sweet: the potential of a new career, excitement of a new relationship, accomplishment of completing a financial goal, anticipation of a vacation …

But what about the ordinary days.  The days when things are just regular and there is nothing spectacular to celebrate. These are the days that life is made of and they invite us to practice contentment in the ordinary.  Do you ever find yourself trying to escape the feeling of ordinary?  Surely there must be something more to this life than this feeling of discontent?

So how can we cultivate contentment in the midst of regular?

There is a special kind of pause that can change your present moment experience.  Take just a moment to tune into your senses.  What do you see, what do you smell, what do you hear, what do you feel (both physically and emotionally), what do you taste?  Can you recognize the miracle of being alive?  Think of someone you love and notice what it feels like to love.  Think of a time your heart has been broken, what does it feel like to have a broken heart? Think of a time that you thought things would never get better and all of the sudden you found yourself stronger and smiling a little – what was that like.

These are the things life is made of.  These little ordinary experiences come together and tell an extravagant story of life.  It is so very extravagant that we can pause and feel the sun on our skin, hear music that brings us to tears, love so deeply that it hurts, meet others who have their unique story of loss and love, get up and live again after sorrow and grief.

What are you grateful for today?  When you pause and look, where do you find miracles in your life?  What extraordinary thing can you find in this ordinary day?

This “Sailing Stone” slowly scoots along creating a beautiful story of slow progress. It seems that we are like little Sailing Stones in our “ordinary” lives.  This picture was taken by extrodinarily gifted photographer, Daniel Eweret.  Check out more of his stuff:  ewertnaturephotography.com
